NE Pennsylvania to Utah on I-80
We will be traveling I-80 W out of PA and across to Utah next week with our camper. I've heard from various friends and family, to avoid I-80 near Chicago because of the possibility of deadlocked traffic. Any suggestions? We're not looking for the scenic route, just the fastest. Thanks.
RE: Can it be done?
We made it to S. Cal in 3 days in a 73 Crew Cab Chevy with Dad Mom and us four kids with out air.
You are going to be running I-70 right, would think 4 days would be an easy trip. pick up a portable DVD player to give the kids something to do and you will be fine, it's the dogs that I would worry about.
Don
I know I-80 runs East-West across the country and we can pick that up just a couple hours south of here. I know I-80 gets all the semis, so if you know of a better (but still direct) route, I'd love to know!
Can it be done?
So our 2 week trip to move out west has turned into a shorter version. We will be leaving Pennsylvania early on Aug. 6th and need to be in northern Utah by Aug. 10th. If we drive 6-7 hrs a day, stop to sleep and start all over in the morning, do you guys think we could do the trip in 5 days? Keep in mimd, we'll have 3 kids under age 7, 2 doggies and we'll be taking the most direct route as well.
Thanks!

Getting scared...
DH, the kids and I will be making a cross country move at the end of July and will be driving out with our TT. I am getting very nervous just thinking about that drive...Northeast PA to northern Utah. We don't really have a time constraint, so we can take our time, but need to get there before school starts for the fall. I am feaking out thinking about all the things that could go wrong, ie, TV trouble, TT trouble, tire blowouts, bad weather etc. We are taking our TV into the shop for a good once over, changing fluids, new tires and new brakes, before we leave and the TT was just inspected. What else can we do to be sure we're safe? Any advice for that long of a trip? The furthest we've gone was to Cherrystone, VA last summer. This upcoming trip is at least 2100 miles...one way!
The only other option would be to fly, but the company will not ship the TT. :(
Thanks everyone.
RE: Big trip plans for a little tt?
We'll be driving from northeast Pennsylvania to northern Utah around the end of July. We're transfering for hubby's job and the company won't move the RV, so we're taking a road trip with the kids. Should be an experience!
Route recommendations?
Hubby's job is transfering us from northeastern PA to northern Utah this July and we're trying to come up with some sort of travel plan. We have 3 daughters, almost 7, almost 5 & 2, so we want to tow our camper and see the country on our way out. Why fly over everything when we can take 2 weeks to see the sights, right? So, would it be better to see a travel agent for help with this or can someone recommend some stops along the way? We were thinking of taking I80 West, then head up to the Dakotas, see Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone and down into Utah. I know there's more out there, but I'm drawing a blank right now. Also, will we have problems finding campgrounds that will allow us to stay just one night during the summer season? I know many places here in the East are 2 night minimum stays during the summer. If anyone could offer some help, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
RE: Anyone camp without satellite TV
We camp without satellite...actually, we camp without cable! We bring a TV, but only use it if the kids want to watch a DVD. We're outside the majority of the time! We'll be making a cross country move this summer and will probably opt for some normal TV at some point in our trip, though!
RE: They canceled our first camping trip!
Sorry to hear your 1st trip got canceled because of snow! What a bummer! Hopefully you can find somewhere to go soon! And if you don't mind me asking, where in Utah are you? Hubby's job is transfering us to Utah this July...Box Elder County actually. We go out next month to see the area and then again in June to house hunt. Fun!
RE: storage/organizing
One tip for families with small children is to pack individual changes of clothes in ziplock bags. I pack a tshirt, shorts, socks & underwear in a gallon size ziplock bag...one per child, per day and throw them all in a large tote. It saves time rooting through stacks of clothes for the right outfit and it saves space in your closets. (I always throw in a couple pairs of jeans and a sweatshirt or two) Just grab a bag and we're good to go.
As far as packing supplies...can't help you there until we get our new TT and figure out where everything goes!
Beachcomber Campground NJ ???
I was wondering if anyone could direct me to the Campground map for Beachcomber campground in NJ? I've search the website over and over and cannot find any link for a map. We'd like to look it over to see what area of the campground would be a good fit for two families (2 sites)...4 adults and 5 children (ages 2,5,7,11 and 13). Any help would be appreciated!
RE: New to RV, No Sofa TT's
We just traded in our 23SS hybrid for a Wildwood 23BH. No sofa, two bunks in back, queen in front and a bunk over the queen. We really wanted a totally enclosed trailer, but a shorter length. DH didn't like the rear queen slides because he's 6'2" and can't sprawl out. So, we found this unit and really liked it. We will sacrifice the sofa (which we didn't use very often in the HTT anyway...we're outside 90% of the time) for a lighter, shorter, totally enclosed trailer. It is the exact layout shown in the link below, just different fabrics. We don't have it yet, but think we'll be very happy! Good luck in your search!

RE: Need opinions, PLEASE! (nevermind)
Ok, 1st, we have been searching for a new trailer since last year. We had a Shamrock 23SS and after having that for 2 years, we know that we didn't want the pop out beds anymore. 2nd, we narrowed down floor plan options by searching online. We found this dealer and are very happy with them. Of all the trailers there, we liked the two listed above the best. We don't want to pay a fortune for an '08, but we want a good quality unit for the price we are willing to pay. All I asked was your opinion on buying used or new. I know there are hundreds of options out there, but we don't want to go anwhere else and we don't want to fork out a ton of money.
So, to anyone else willing to give their opinion on new or used, I'd be happy to hear!
Need opinions, PLEASE! (nevermind)
Hubby and I have a dilemma. A few weeks ago, we went to a dealer for a sale and found a new '06 trailer that we really liked. While there, there was a used one (2004) that was also high on our list, but when we inquired about it, there were people in the process of buying it, so we went ahead with the '06. I just checked the website and see the used one is listed again, so apparently, the deal fell through.
The '06 is a Wildwood 23BH, which they no longer make, but we have the warranty. It's short in length and short on storage, but figured we could make it work.
The '04 is a Damon Hornet 27SB sport. Longer in length, but tons of storage and more sleeping options. Both are the same price. Keep in mind that we have 3 little girls, ages 6.5, 4.5 and almost 2.
Would you buy the new '06 and be creative with storage or buy the used one with room for all of us and more? I'm leary about buying used? Any thoughts???? Thanks so much!
EDITED: The used unit is actually $1000 cheaper than the new one...
EDITED AGAIN: The used unit sold...salesman didn't remove listing...oh well. Thanks anyway!
Lousy weather!
The dealer was supposed to come pick up our traded in HTT today, but because of the wind advisory, they opted not to. And, we opted not to go get our new TT, too! Whaaa! Even though we can't use it right now, I would be SO much happier with it in my driveway. I'd like to get some stuff packed into it and come up with some storage options, but I guess I have to wait a few weeks. Blah! My whine for the day...
New trailer!
Well, we are offically TT owners! DH and I traded in the HTT for a Wildwood 23BH over the weekend. We'll be doing our walk through tomorrow, I believe and the dealer will be picking up our old Shamrock this week as well! We were really tired of the condensation we had with the HTT and the fact that our camping season started later and ended earlier than we wanted. We will sacrifice a bit of storage, but each girl has her own bed and we will be warm and dry!!! We're not inside that much anyway! It's a new, leftover '06...has all the warranties and the plastic is still on the front queen bed! Sweet!
2006 Wildwood 23BH?
I came across this unit (online) at a dealer a couple hours from us and am trying to find the floorplan for it. I've searched everywhere for the year and model, but haven't found anything close to what the pictures from the dealer show. Could this be an error in advertising? Anyone know where I could locate a 2006 brochure for a Wildwood LE? The closest floorplan I've found is for the 24BH, but that has a rear garage door...I don't think I saw that in any of the pics. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
RE: best family camping tip....
I agree 100%! We just got back from our last trip of the season and my girls wore them the entire time. Made it easy to slip off for potty breaks and also allowed them to splash in some puddles. We took old sneakers, but they were soaked within minutes...luckily, I had kept the rubber boots in the camper from an earlier trip!
Last trip of the season...
Just arrived back home this morning from the last trip of the season for us. We spent the last two nights at a local CG for their "UnHaunted Halloween" weekend. The kids had a blast! Pumpkin bowling, pumpkin painting, trick or treating, decorate your site contest, Halloween Ball and costume contest...lots for them to do. (They are all napping now as I type this...just plain tuckered out!) The weather was wonderful. Sunny and cool...perfect for an all-day campfire! We decided to keep the rear bunk up to keep the heat in a little better and boy, did we stay toasty warm! Middle daughter, 18mo daughter and myself on the front bunk with the heated mattress, oldest daughter on the couch and hubby and the boxer on the dinette bed. We cracked a couple windows, set the furnace at 65 and slept like logs. Just a nice weekend all around...and a nice way to end the season!
Hershey?
Anyone here going to the Hershey show this week? I'd like to go...just to see what's out there. We're kind of limited on dealers around here and thought it would be nice to check out the other manufacturers. The only day we could go is Saturday and I'm sure it'll be crazy busy then...DH doesn't know if he wants to go. Anyone know if it's a good show? Worth a 2+ hr drive?
